Tourism:
Fort Lauderdale's economy relies heavily on tourism.
While the 70s had Fort Lauderdale known as a spring
break destination for college students, the police
have cracked down on underage drinking and other illicit
activity. This redirected tourist dollars toward cruise
ships and other nautical recreation from Port Everglades,
though the spring-breakers have been making a comeback.
The entertainment district runs West to East along
Las Olas Blvd., from the heart of downtown to the
beach. The district is anchored in the West by the
Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and runs through
the city all the way to the beach, where the "Elbo
Room" bar is located. It was featured in the 1960's
film Where the Boys Are.
The area is served by both Port Everglades and the
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).
The airport has been growing steadily and Port Everglades
continues to grow in traffic, taking passenger traffic
away from nearby Port of Miami. Both crew and passengers
have been known to take advantage of the proximity
of our facility for the Fort Lauderdale self-storage
needs. This is convenient for many reasons, not the
least of which is to have ready access to your items
upon your return without the expense of rental of
a home or having to bring items back through customs.
Mega Yachts:
Fort Lauderdale is a major manufacturing and maintenance
center for yachts with over 100,000 jobs relying on
the industry. Fort Lauderdale has many canals and
provides easy access to the Bahamas and Caribbean.
This makes it a popular way station for those traveling
from elsewhere in the U.S. on the way to those destinations.
This allows them to replinish supplies prior to making
the journey.
Boat slips numbers have been declining in recent years
and a focus on the large mega-yachts has been the
key to the area industry.
The New River area around Las Olas Boulevard has seen
dramatic growth with new condominiums and offices
rising, making the area popular with businesses looking
to relocate. A few companies now in the area include:
AutoNation, Citrix, DHL, and Spirit Airlines. Fort
Lauderdale is also emerging as a gateway to Latin
America, with several companies selecting the area
for their Latin American headquarters.
